2021 Assisted Living Statistics

April 28th, 2021

Over the years, there has been a growing demand for quality assisted living care. A driving factor of this demand is the increase of those in the Baby Boomer generation reaching retirement age. While housing units continue to be added, offering even more senior housing options for those entering retirement, occupancy rates dropped significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the population continues to be inoculated, a growth has been seen in senior housing occupancy, including assisted living.

Statistics on Assisted Living in 2021

Below are some of the current statistics on assisted living communities across the nation and in our own home state.

Assisted Living Communities in Missouri

According to the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL), there are nearly 29,000 assisted living communities with about 1 million licensed beds operating in the United States today. On average, a community will have 33 licensed beds, but larger communities can have over 100 beds, while smaller ones may have as few as four to 10.

To help us take a closer look at Missouri specifically, the NCAL created a Fast Facts sheet with information unique to our state. According to this information, there are currently 400 assisted living communities in Missouri. In these communities, 40 percent of residents are over the age of 85, and 35 percent of those in assisted living currently have Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. Assisted living communities in Missouri offer a variety of services to meet the diverse needs of residents, with programs including social work (50%), mental health or counseling services (60%) and skilled nursing services (54%), just to name a few.

A Few More Statistics on Senior Citizens in Assisted Living

The NCAL report also notes that there are currently more than 800,000 Americans residing in assisted living communities. Demographically, a majority of residents are white females who are 85 or older. In fact, 71 percent of residents at assisted living communities across the nation are female. It’s also estimated that assisted living residents stay for an average length of 22 months before transitioning to a skilled nursing center for a higher level of care.

Why do seniors and their families seek assisted living services like those at Garden Plaza? The NCAL states:

  • 64% need assistance with bathing.
  • 48% need help with dressing.
  • 40% require help with using the restroom.
  • 19% require assistance with eating.
  • 29% need some assistance transferring in and out of bed.

Some common conditions assisted living residents have are high blood pressure (52%), dementia (42%), depression (31%) and heart disease (34%).
